• Field of professional interest, other activities:
Dealing with spinal patients meant bedrest, giving orthesis and making plasterbeds at the beginning of my carrier. There were only a few exceptions including my father, who developed a method for surgically treating spondylolisthesis via direct compression screwing and my first and ever since boss, Peter Paul Varga, MD, who systematically brought home the original surgical methods treating spinal disorders, including stabilization, prosthetic, and minimal invasive techniques. The latest increasingly come to the center of my interest so I spent - after 18 months general orthopedic and trauma practice - 20 months at The Spinal Foundation, Rochdale with Mr. Martin Knight learning minimally invasive techniques in diagnosing and treating the spinal problems. I learnt using lasers, endoscopes and using a computed database. Later I become familiar with Intradiscal Elektrothermal Therapy, Vertebro- and Kyphoplasty.

From here my development vent two-way: I started dealing with prevention seeing, that minimally invasive techniques together with well trained musculature give the patient pain free and reliable spine in most cases. On the other hand some elderly patient could not profit from these methods, and needed permanent surgical solution for their problems. I increasingly dealt with long fusions and semirigid fixation techniques, which can survive even in osteoporotic spine. We developed the bone cement nucleoplasty technique.

In the meantime The National Center for Spinal Disorders, my workplace played an increasing role in treating spinal problems in a holistic way in Hungary. Here orthopedic and neurosurgeons, neurologist, rehabilitation doctor, rheumatologist, a number of physiotherapists, radiologists (we have our own digital x-ray machine, CT and MR scanners, osteodensitometry, ultrasound) worked together with psychologists and a psychiatrist. This established our possibility for scientific trials and also the need for big operations, such as infection and tumor work. We also started operating on developmental problems and scoliosis, although this is not my profile.

Regarding spine trauma, this is not the profile of my Institution, I have limited experience regarding this field. I am pretty confident on what to operate and what not to operate and how to treat conservatively, especially if there is a locally trained staff helping this work. I am familiar with thoracolumbar posterior approaches, working intervertebrally, even performing osteotomy or corpectomy, but have limited experience with ventral approaches. I have some experience with anterior cervical fusion and prosthesis (Discover), and have extensive experience with most minimally invasive techniques including CAS (computer assisted surgery)

I am a fully trained orthopedic surgeon, but have not practiced that spectrum since 1994. I do not need to much of sleeping and have no problem with working or learning new methods. Although I live in a family with wife and two children, I have spent 4-12 weeks away from them in a few times already (children attend university now).
