Sports Surgery
Sports surgery is that special arm of orthopedics that deals with the prevention, development, diagnosis and treatment of the functional disorders, diseases and injuries of the locomotor system. More specifically, sports surgery concerns itself with injuries to the locomotor and support systems sustained during sports activities or with the damages of overuse resulting as a consequence thereof.
In acute sports injury cases that involve muscles, tendons, ligaments, joints or damage caused by chronic overuse, conservative (non-surgical) treatment is applied initially, whenever possible. In some cases, however, a sports injury will require surgery which will be performed at the highest level of competence using the most up-to-date techniques. The Rehabilitation Department is a mainstay of sports surgery in the conservative treatments as well as the post-operative rehabilitation phase according to the special physiotherapy modalities.
Sports Medicine
The knowledge evolved in the practice of sports medicine effected the treatment of patients who are physically active but are not professional athletes. The excellent results obtained in sports science in the course of treating professional sports injuries, may now be applied and regularly incorporated into the exercise and training rehabilitation programs following injuries.
The sports physical therapist and physiotherapist work closely together in providing optimal treatment and in developing a prevention program for the professional athlete and the active leisure sports person. Sports medicine and health screening examinations are important in cases of increased physical exertion and advanced age. Some sports injuries are preventable with a thorough physical examination by a sports medicine doctor and a prevention program. Dietary consultation and sports psychology complete the sports medicine disciplines.
