CT of the Head
Purpose
Generally, we use MR imaging for most diagnostic examinations of the head. If this is not possible, then the CT is the recommended alternative method. The scanning allows us to see abnormalities in the brain's structure, blood vessels and bony elements comprising the skull. Developmental variations may be observed as well as abnormalities in the cerebral ventricles and changes occurring in certain primary or secondary tumors found in the brain substance. It is also recommended following trauma to rule out possible skull fracture and hematoma.
Are there any preparations required prior to the appointment?
No special preparation is required other than that you not ingest any food before your appointment. An empty stomach is required. Certain diabetic medications are not compatible with the contrast material and should not be taken. It is important, in this case, that you consult with your doctor beforehand. In any event, it is good to come prepared for a contrast material examination.
How is the procedure performed?
A series of regular images and a series of contrast material images will be prepared. A series of soft and bony tissue series will be prepared from the images in both cases.
Contraindications
Allergic reaction to the contrast material.
