CT of the Sinuses
Purpose
This examination is, generally, performed upon the request of an ENT doctor. The scan will show inflammation of the sinuses, swelling of the inner cavity mucous lining, fluids and polyps, and the condition of the bony walls.
What preparations are required beforehand?
No special preparation is normally needed for a CT scan unless contrast material is required, in which case, the patient should come on an empty stomach. Certain diabetes medications must not be taken prior to the examination, thus, it is important to consult with your physician prior to the scan. In any event, it is best to come prepared for contrast material.
What does the procedure entail?
You will be guided into the scanner and asked to lie very still. Usually a series of regular images of the sinuses will be prepared and, when required, a series of contrast material also. In all cases, a series of images of the bony structures and a series of the soft tissues will be prepared.
Contraindications
No real contraindications exist in most cases. In cases of allergy, of course, no contrast material is administered. In all cases, we recommend that you consult with your physician in order to determine what examination would be best for you.
