CT of the Small Intestine, Selective
Purpose
With the addition of orally administered contrast material, the CT scan makes it possible to examine the entire length of the small intestine not possible with other methods of examination. The width of the intestine can thus be determined, the exact size and location of any inflammatory processes and tumors causing constriction found, changes in the intestinal wall noted and abnormalities found in organs falling within the area examined. It is also possible to show what effect diseases of the small intestine have on its surroundings and on the nearby organs and the new passages and enlarged lymph nodes formed as the result of inflammatory diseases.
What preparations are needed beforehand?
No special preparation is needed for the CT scan other than the patient should come on an empty stomach. Due to the contrast material, certain medications for diabetes must not be taken prior to the examination, thus, it is important to consult with your physician prior to the scan.
What does the procedure entail?
The examination takes 2˝-3 hours due to having to intermittently ingest a large amount of liquids (detailed instructions will be given). The actual CT scan images will then be prepared including a series of regular images followed by one or more series of contrast material images. From these, additional even thinner series of slices may be prepared (not involving the patient) allowing for the possibility of 2D reconstruction.
Contraindications
Contraindications would be if the patient must not or will not ingest a large amount of liquid (2 liters) or is allergic to the contrast material. CT scans without contrast material will be prepared only in special cases since they are of limited value in these cases.
