CT of the Spine

3D CT gerinc2Objective
To obtain information regarding the condition of the bony elements of the spine (i.e., vertebral body, intervertebral joints).  For examination of the spinal cord, the MRI is used.  We also choose CT scans, in many cases, when planning surgery and also as a follow-up examination after surgery.  This method is also used in the event of possible reconstruction in cases of scoliosis.  In certain special cases, the examination is enhanced by a contrast material administered surgically into the spinal canal.  This CT examination then is a myelography.

Are there any necessary preparations?

No preparations are, generally, necessary. We use a contrast material only in unusual cases and then only when indicated and following discussion with the Patient.

3D_szegmentumWhat is the examination procedure?
With the Patient lying in the prone position, a series of CT images is prepared of the spine segment involved from which images of the soft tissues and of the bones are then separated and reconstructed into 2D images, in special cases, into 3D images. The examination takes but a few minutes.  Is not time-consuming to the Patient.

Contraindications
No real contraindications exist.  In the event that contrast material should be needed, allergy to the material would be a contraindication.
