Bone density measuring - DEXA

Bone Density and Total Body Mass (fat, muscle, bone mineral ratio) Measurement

The GE Prodigy Advance is the latest generation of bone densitometers on the market to date.  Designed to measure bone density, mineral contents and the risk of fracture on the lumbar spine, the hips, the forearms and the body as a whole, the DEXA examination forewarns of the danger of osteoporosis ahead of any manifested complaints making early medical treatment possible before serious complications should set in!  This is the most accepted method not only for determining osteoporosis but also for following up on the treatment’s effectiveness or the condition’s deterioration.

What happens during the examination?

At the time of the whole body mass measurement, the fat and muscle mass and ratio may be measured allowing us to determine early on from the location of the body fat and type of obesity, the risk of certain illnesses such as cardiovascular disease and diabetes.  Information regarding the effectiveness of the prescribed exercises can be shown and the percentage of fat decrease and muscle mass increase are shown numerically.

Before the examination, you will be asked several questions regarding illnesses and fractures that may have occurred in your family history.  These will be entered into our database.  The densitometric (DEXA) examination is painless.  All you will be asked to do is to lie still for a few minutes, in the prone position, on the machine.

Anyone with increased bone loss may fracture a wrist even in a relatively small fall.  It may be that a heavy basket, package may cause the lower back or the back to crack causing serious pain.  In these cases, the vertebrae may collapse again causing pain and permanent neurological complaints such a herniated disc, numbness in the legs or even paralysis.

Measuring bone density

The most feared consequence of osteoporosis is hip fracture which, in the elderly, often results in bed confinement, drastically affecting life’s quality and outlook.

Thus, measuring and ascertaining bone density with DEXA, the most precise method, is extremely important.  The whole examination procedure takes but 10 minutes and is completely painless and the radioactive rays are no more than what we daily receive from our food or 1 hour of flying at 10,000 meters.

Osteoporosis examination is especially recommended for women over 50 years of age and for both women and men over 40 years of age whose family medical history includes osteoporosis.

You should undergo a DEXA examination if you have the following:

  • low body mass index (BMI), alcoholism, smoking, too much coffee
    • osteoporosis in the family
    • menopause (women and men over 50 years of age)
    • gynecological examination found glandular disorder (early menopause or irregular menstruation)
    • advanced age
    • over 30 years of age
    • suffers from osteoporosis and is taking medication (i.e., steroids) with such side effects
    • suffers from diabetes, liver disease, kidney disease
    • thyroid and parathyroid and nutrient absorption disorder

low calcium diet

  • hormonal (endocrine) diseases that increase the risk of osteoporosis
  • sedentary life style or immobilization due to illness
  • lasting effect from medication (epilepsy, steroids, thyroid medications)
  • hormonal disorders in men (i.e., low testosterone levels)
