3D/4D Ultrasound Fetal Examinations
What is the difference between a 3D/4D ultrasound and a regular ultrasound?
While the regular or two-dimensional ultrasound shows an image on a single plane, the 3D ultrasound works up not one but a series of planes thus creating a three-dimensional image of the fetus. The 4D ultrasound adds movement, thus, showing the fetus in motion in real time. The 3D/4D technology has the following advantages over the 2D examination:
- the face, fingers, arms and legs are seen much more clearly,
- the images may be evaluated from additional perspectives at a later date, making more precise diagnosis possible,
- with the addition of movement, we may observe the fetus smiling, blinking or yawning,
- the life-like images allows the father to also connect with his child,
- experience has shown that viewing the 3D/4D video together has a calming effect on the mother and strengthens the bonds between parent and child,
- studies have shown that after seeing the 3D/4D images, the mother is much more likely to take care of her health during the remainder of her pregnancy.
When is the best time for a 3D/4D ultrasound?
The Hungarian Society of Ultrasound in Obstetrics and Gynecology recommends four routine ultrasound examinations at certain intervals during pregnancy. The 3D/4D technology would be an important tool in formulating an exact diagnosis.
- The first trimester examination occurs at 12 to 13 weeks of gestation through a vaginal scan. The purpose is to confirm pregnancy, establish if there is more than one fetus, confirm that the fetus is alive, check for any major problems. Measure the fluid beneath the fetal skin in the region of the fetal neck (nuchal translucency). Rule out ectopic pregnancy.
- The second trimester examination occurs at 16 to 18 weeks of gestation. This is the most important ultrasound examination for finding developmental abnormalities and the time for genetic screenings. The fetal organs are first examined with the 2D technique and then supplemented by the 3D/4D method. The face shows up well now. The entire fetus cannot be seen any longer at once, only one area at a time.
- The third trimester examination occurs at 26 to 28 weeks of gestation. Proper fetal development is checked. Data from fetal blood circulation attained in the event of suspected problems. The baby's facial contours and movements are best seen at this time making the baby videos evermore meaningful. The sex may be determined now, if the fetus happens to be cooperative.
- The 38th week is for ascertaining the position of the fetus, its estimated weight, the degree of placental maturity, the amount of amniotic liquid and certain fetal biometric data. A flowmetry test may be done, if necessary, to examine the fetal and placental blood flow.
How is the procedure performed?
The examination lasts 20 to 30 minutes. The 3D and 4D images may only be prepared following the 2D images, thus, before any 3D and 4D examinations take place, the 2D technique is used to obtain information regarding biometry, fetal weight, fetal organs and regarding the condition of the uterus and placenta. Pictures are printed, a DVD, and possibly a video, prepared. At the end of the examination, it is possible to request that the images stored in the ultrasound memory be copied onto the parents' own CD.
The patient will receive a printed medical report.
