What is the purpose of this procedure?
The purpose of the joint sonography is to evaluate the soft tissues surrounding the joints such as cartilage, ligaments, tendons and muscles. Tears, fluid accumulation and cartilage injuries are easily observed. The advantage of the ultrasound method over magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) is that dynamic examinations may be done, that is, the images are shown in motion.
