Abdominal and Pelvic Sonography

What is the purpose of this procedure?

The purpose of the abdominal sonography is to evaluate the internal organs located between the diaphragm and the pelvic bone (i.e., the liver, the gallbladder, the bile ducts, the pancreas and the spleen) as well as the kidneys, abdominal arteries and the condition of the intestinal wall. The pelvic sonography includes the evaluation of the bladder, the uterus, the ovaries and the prostate.  Possible pathology or lesions may ascertain diseases. 

What preparation is required prior to the procedure?

The patient must arrive on an empty stomach or, must not have eaten at all 6 hours prior to the examination. One to one and one-half hours before the examination, the patient must drink 6 dl. (20 fl.oz) of non-carbonated water to fill the bladder. The bladder should be full at the time of the procedure - must not be emptied prior to the examination!

The patient will be asked to lie supine on the examining table and then asked to turn from side to side for better viewing of an organ. You may be asked to take a deep breath and hold it. 

Are there any contraindications to this procedure?

There are no definitive contraindications to this procedure.
Should the patient, however, arrive having eaten or with an empty bladder, the tests will be of limited value or may, as a consequence, not be performed at all.
 
The patient will receive a written report of the results.
