Transrectal Ultrasound Examination

UH rectumWhat is the purpose of this procedure?

The technique is used to determine abnormalities of the prostate and the seminal vesicles in men. In surgery: it is used to determine the spread of abnormalities. In young women: it is used in the place of ultrasound.

What preparation is required for this procedure?

The bowels should be emptied on the morning of the procedure. If it does not happen spontaneously, then a glycerin suppository should be inserted. Enema is not necessary.

How is the procedure performed?UH prostata 2

The patient will be asked to lie on the left side with bent legs. The examiner inserts the transducer in the rectum and examines the prostate carefully. The images are projected onto a screen.

Are there any contraindications to this procedure?

There is no absolute contraindication to the procedure; however, an inflamed hemorrhoid or a narrow anal opening would cause difficulties and pain.
 
The patient will receive a written report of the results.
